Hunger In The Midst Of Plenty
Hunger In The Midst Of Plenty
To the Editor:
Last week, I visited with Patty and Duane Markenson, fourth generation farmers from Montana, making their first visit to New York City. An inspiring example of American productivity, this couple, by themselves, is able maintain a 7,200-acre farm, planting 3,600 acres each year in wheat and harvesting over 200,000 bushels.
Technology has had a profound impact on agriculture, enabling America to help feed many nations. However, despite these advancements and the overwhelming food surplus generated each year, many in our local communities, in fact in our own town, still go to bed each night hungry. In a community of such accumulated wealth, many have been left behind.
This year, on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, the Knights of Columbus are sponsoring a dinner for those in our community who are alone or in need. You may recall we sponsored meals last year during Christmas and St Patrickâs Day, feeding over 2,000 in our community and local shelters. This holiday season, we may surpass this number. You can assist us in our endeavor by volunteering or through a tax-deductible donation to âAt Our Gateâ and mailing it to Frank Middleton at 4 Rose Lane Sandy Hook, CT 06482. Should you have any questions please call Frank at 426-0098.
Thank you for your support. May God bless you and your family.
Sincerely,
Mark Dennen
