John Thomas Downey, 83, of Trumbull, died May 6, at Middlesex Hospital. He was born and raised in Stratford, son of the late Frederick and Jeannette (Clark) Downey.

His loving daughters Elizabeth Ryan and her husband, Fred, of Newtown and Susan McElroy and her husband, Larry, of Trumbull; his four beloved grandchildren; his brother Fred Downey and his wife, Phebe; four nieces and their families; cousin; and many cherished friends, especially Duane Haley and Ray Boag whose support was a great comfort, survive Mr Downey. His beloved wife Muriel (Mimi) Burritt Downey predeceased him.

Mr Downey served with the United States Marines from 1951 to 1953. He was a salesman, and worked at Tri-Lift until his retirement a few years ago.

He was a well-known area golfer, and held many course records and tournament titles. He was a longtime member at Mill River Country Club.

The family expresses their gratitude to Middlesex Hospital Hospice Seven South for their excellent care, respect and concern.

Friends are invited to attend his funeral service, Friday, May 10, at 11 am, directly at St Theresa Church, 5301 Main Street, Trumbull. Interment will be in St Michael’s Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday, May 9, from 4 to 8 pm, at the Cyril F. Mullins Funeral Home, 399 White Plains Road, Trumbull.
