CARRABASSET Valley, Maine – Nearly 50 members of the Winterset Ski Club spent the week of March 16th at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine skiing (either downhill or cross country), snow boarding and snow shoeing and enjoying the pleasant spring ski conditions.

The trip included 5½ days of skiing from ski-in, ski-out condos, free daily lessons and the use of the health club with pool, hot tubs, steam rooms, saunas and exercise equipment (if anyone had any energy left). Andy Lapati planned and coordinated this trip for the eighth consecutive year.

Meanwhile, 91 Wintersetters spent the weekend at Okemo participating in the Connecticut Ski Council On-Snow Carnival. Nickie O’Toole and Brian Burke planned and coordinated all the weekend details and events. The club came in fourth-place overall, achieving first in the Ski Rally event and second in both the Volleyball and Downhill Race.

Other event highlights were:

Women’s Race – The combo of Heather Kilgore, Jeanette Cebry and Meghan O’Toole finished third … only 1.5 seconds out of second place.

Snowboard Race – A smashing success for Winterset, which had the most entries. The combined time of Matt Taylor and Patrick Daly was good for third … only 1.5 seconds behind the second-place team.

Junior A Race – Congratulations to Sean Keogh and Ryan Tita, who had the two best times for the boy/girl entries and finished fourth.

Junior B Race – Congratulations to Rick O’Toole, Clay Brier and Andrew Culmo, who combined for the three best times and finished sixth.

Cross-Country Race – For the club’s first-ever participation in the Nordic ski event, it was a seventh-place finish. Hats off to Gary Chucta and Julie Farrell, whose combined times were seconds out of sixth place. Pam Steel, Andy Lapati and Scott Brier rounded out the team.

Team Race – The best four times were Paul Chabot, Chaz Perry, Mike Montessi and Steve Taylor and they finished third.

Club Race – Top five finishers of the Club’s entries were Mike O’Toole, Victor Roy, Brian Burke, Andy Lapati and Len LaVardera. Together, they finished fifth.

Tug of War – Some of the tough tuggers were Tim Keogh, Chaz Perry, Len LaVardera, Lois Culmo and Bob Greenfield, together finishing fifth.

Awards, medals and recognition will be given at the club’s next social event – Pizza & Awards Night – which will be held at the Dodgingtown Firehouse on April 25. All members are welcome. Visit www.wintersetskiclub.org on the web.
