St Vincent’s Using Robotics

 For Faster Test Results

Patients who need tests in the Emergency Room at St Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport will see faster results, thanks to new technology just installed in the hospital’s chemistry laboratory.

The robotics-based system will cut testing time in half and offer many other benefits, medical center officials say. Those gains are made possible by the new Bayer ADVIA WorkCell automation system, made by Tarrytown, N.Y.-based Bayer Diagnostics. St Vincent’s is the first hospital in Connecticut, and one of only ten nationwide, currently using this advanced technology.

The WorkCell uses robotics and computerization to handle patient specimens, which can be blood, urine, spinal cord fluid, or other bodily fluids. The system uploads the test results directly to the hospital’s computers for immediate review by physicians and other clinicians. It reduces the possibility of errors by minimizing manual handling of samples, and it is operated 24/7 by teams of technicians working on three shifts.
