CAPE COD, MASS. â Chalmers Hemmenway will lead part one of a two-part discussion about âWhat is a Painting: Aesthetic Elements â Composition and the Elements of Mass,â at The Cape Cod Museum of Art on January 27. He will analyze how mass and line are the essentials with which a painter states his or her message. Illustrations will be drawn from prehistoric cave painting to Picasso and beyond, from the West and the East, from the familiar work of the Impressionists to the complexities of the modern and postmodern eras. CAPE COD, MASS. â Chalmers Hemmenway will present the second part of his lecture series, âWhat is a Painting: More Aesthetic Elements â Color, Light and Shadow, Space and Texture,â at The Cape Cod Museum of Art on February 1. This lecture will be about modeling with light and shadow, two- and three-dimensional color, and texture.
