November Is Girl Scout Cookie Time

What does the month of November signify? Besides Thanksgiving, it is probably Girl Scout Cookies, for November is the month when thousands of Girl Scouts in Fairfield County contact friends and family to ask them if they would like to buy famous Girl Scout Cookies, which this year, for the first time, are all trans-fat free.

But before those scouts make that telephone call or visit prospective clients, a lot of preparation has taken place that makes the Girl Scout Cookie Program a successful leadership development program for girls. Lifetime business and personal skills learned by those Girl Scouts doing the order taking and delivery, include goal setting, decisionmaking, strategizing, financial literacy, manners, teamwork, and improved communication with both girls and adults as girls learn about the specifics of the cookies, plan their marketing approach, and practice their sales delivery.

While Girl Scouts are learning, having fun, and earning money to fund their chosen troop trips, activities, and community service projects, the Cookie Program is also supplying needed revenue to help the Girl Scout Council of Southwestern Connecticut bring the Girl Scout Program to its local communities. The Council creates and offers scholarships, programs, and supplies; provides insurance and maintenance for the council’s four Outdoor Program Centers; and offers extensive first aid, CPR, and level training for leaders, to name just a few of its varied responsibilities.

Almost one out of every five girls ages 5 to 17 in the council’s 15 towns and cities in Fairfield County is a Girl Scout. These good role models are known for their prolific community service. Buying Girl Scout Cookies is one very easy way for everyone to help make the Girl Scout Program and good works possible.

If an individual or a business does not know a Girl Scout with whom to place an order, call the Girl Scout Council at 203-762-5557, extension 48, for a local contact.
