Poster Challenge: How Does Recycling Help Protect The Earth?

The Housatonic Resources Recovery Authority would like to find out from students in grades K–12 what they think about recycling and its benefits for the Earth.

HRRA, with Union Savings Bank, and the Regional Recycling Task Force, is offering a poster contest for public, private, and home-schooled students within its 11-town area — which includes Newtown — to prepare for and celebrate Earth Day on April 22. Students are invited to create posters following the theme “How Does Recycling Help The Earth?” Posters are to measure 8½ by 11 inches, and can be any color and use any medium.

Contestants should write their names, addresses, schools, grade levels, and phone numbers on the back of the poster. Entries should be submitted to Arlene Miles, the Public Works Administrator in Newtown, by February 20. Winners will be announced March 14, and awards will be presented during the first two weeks of April.

Local winners will receive a yellow ribbon, and have their posters displayed in their local Union Savings Bank. Each participant will be given piggy bank made from recycled yellow pages, currency, or denim.

The HRRA Executive Committee will judge the poster winners from each school or town by grade level and select a first, second, and third place winner for each grade for the region. Third place winners for each grade will receive a $50 savings bond, second place winners a $75 savings bond, and first place winners a $100 savings bond, all provided by Union Savings Bank.

Regional winners will receives savings bonds from Union Savings Bank (parents should note that they will be required to provide their child’s Social Security Number so that a savings bond can be purchased in their child’s name).

Call Ms Miles at 270-4300 for more information, or visit NewtownCT.VirtualTownHall.net and click on Recycling Poster Contest under the Newtown News & Announcements banner.
