Children’s Programs

*Summer Reading: Our summer reading program, “Reading Roundup,” continues through August 16. Summer Reading is an ongoing independent reading program for children ages 4 to grade 5. Children read books and talk about what they are reading with young adult volunteers during library hours. Participants receive coupons for pizza, ice cream, a Happy Meal and a free paperback after reading 20 books.

Sign up any time during the seven-week program. Older readers can participate in “Middle School Madness and earn chances to win prizes donated by area businesses. No registration is required.

*Note the Change in date for the “Fun with Spanish Story Time:” “Fun With Spanish,” an interactive introduction to the Spanish language, will be on Tuesday mornings, July 16, 23, 30 and August 6, not on Monday as previously scheduled. The preschool session will be 10:30 to 11:15 am and the elementary (ages 6 and up) will be run from 11:30 am to 12:15. No registration is required.

*Nutmeg Books Discussions: Liz Arneth is leading book discussions on two of the 2003 Nutmeg Children’s Book Award nominees. Flying Solo, by Ralph Fletcher, will be the topic of conversation on Friday, July 26, from 3:30 to 4:30.

Joseph Bruchac’s Heart of a Chief will be discussed on Friday, August 16, also at 3:30.

Sign-up sheets and copies of the books are available in the children’s department.

*P.J. Story Time: Grab your blankie and your slippers and join us at the library for songs, stories and a puppet show. P.J. Story Time will be offered Wednesdays, July 17, 24, 31, and August 7, from 6:30 to 7:15, in the meeting room. No registration is required.

Adult Programs

*Summer Concert Series will continue with River City Slim & The Zydeco Hogs on Friday, July 12. The Hogs have come back to Newtown for a command performance; last year they had everyone dancing.

Bring a blanket and a picnic supper and enjoy an evening of music under the stars. Performances begin at 7 pm. In the event of rain the concert will be moved indoors.

The Frank Porto Band will be performing on August 2.
