ON-GOING

Monday, April 23 – “Fathers’ Night” – 7:30 pm.

Mondays, April 23, 30, May 14, and June 4 – “Parents of Children with Special Needs” – 9 am.

SPECIAL NOTE: Monday, May 7, 9 to 10:30 am, Dr Jack Fong, Chairman of Pediatrics, Danbury Hospital, will be the guest speaker at a special meeting for parents of children with special needs. Dr Fong will speak about services available in the greater Danbury area. Please call NYS to register.

Wednesday, April 25, 4 to 8 pm, “Growing Together 2001”

Middle Gate School – open to parents. Workshops on Reading, Writing, Creativity, Real Boys, Family and School Collaboration, Math, Software, Bullying, Conflict Resolution, Language, Classroom Management, and more.

VIOLENCE AND THE MEDIA – THE TIE THAT BINDS – Presented by Dorothy Singer, PhD. This timely program will be held on Monday, May 7, from 7 to 9 pm at the Newtown High School Lecture Hall. Dr Singer is co-director, Family Television Research and Consultation Center, Yale University.

This free presentation is co-sponsored by Newtown Youth Services and the Newtown Prevention Council. Please call to register-270-4335.

14TH ANNUAL NYS TALENT SHOW

Friday, May 11, 7 pm, Newtown Middle School. Ticket prices are $4 for adults and $2 for children.

4-H: Wednesdays, 4-5:30 pm. Harvest your own flowers and vegetables in a garden plot you design yourself! Help us build a Butterfly Plant Nursery, a Children’s Theme Garden, and a Chicken and Rabbit Garden. Plant a row for the hungry in our garden and bring your pet to our pet show. We meet at NYS, so come and join us.

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

2ND ANNUAL INDEPENDENT LIVING DAY, SATURDAY, MAY 5 – Looking for adult and student volunteers to go to senior citizens’ homes and do odd jobs which assist them in living independently.

Two different time shifts. Breakfast and lunch will be served to volunteer crews. Entire day runs from 9 am to 3 pm. Please call NYS to volunteer your time for a very worthwhile cause – 270-4335.

 

ACTS NEEDED – NYCAAP/HS YAB Talent Show – Wednesday, April 25, 7 pm, Newtown High School. Tickets are $3 for students and $5 for adults. Monies raised will be used to benefit AIDS Service Projects and the YAB Scholarship Fund.

MEETINGS

THE HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD (HS YAB) – Will meet on Mon., April 30, from  5:30 to 6:30 pm.

MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD (MS YAB) ­– Will meet – date to be announced – about Independent Living Day, which is Saturday, May 5. YAB volunteers needed!

NYCAAP will meet on Tuesday, May 1. Meeting time is 5:30 to 6:30 pm.

Please watch this column for all meeting dates and times. Membership in the above groups is free and new members are welcome at all times. For additional info please call the NYS office.
