 Workshop Set For Saturday

Newtown High School will become a science showcase this Saturday for the annual Discovery Science Workshop, held from 9 am to noontime.

This is the eighth year that volunteers from the community will bring 45-minute hands-on workshops to Newtown’s grammar school students and their parents.

Although most of the workshops are full, “drop-ins” will be accepted for three workshops: “How Computer Chips are Made,” “Forensic Exam,” and “Germs and Bugs.”

The morning is divided into two sessions. Session A starts at 9 am and runs until 9:45; Session B runs from 10:15 am until 11 am. At 11 am a guest speaker, “Dr Flush,” will present a program entitled “Life and Life Off.”

Other workshops will include an “Internet Scavenger Hunt,” “Pet Hospital,” and “Chemistry Magic.”

Students should check in through the high school cafeteria between 8:00 and 8:45 Saturday morning; the first workshop will begin promptly at 9 am.

In the event of a snow cancellation, tune into 98Q (98.3 FM). The snow date is March 4.

This year, the Discovery Science Workshops will also include a Scholastic Discovery Book Fair. The fair features non-fiction books, science kits and tools, educational toys and software. The general public is invited to the fair as well as workshop attendees. The book fair will be open from 8 am to 1 pm in the high school’s cafeteria, adjacent to the workshop registration. Cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted.

The workshops are sponsored by the Newtown Junior Women’s Club and the Newtown Board of Education. Corporate sponsors are The Dock and Newtown Savings Bank.
