GIRLS 5TH

 

NEWTOWN 35, EASTON 5: Kate Bowen scored 15 points as Newtown – shutting Easton out for the final three periods of the game – recorded the win to finish the 2002-03 season at 13-10. Sara Kelley scored nine points while Ellen Ritzinger chipped in with three and Nicole Elias, Lindsey Lively, Ally Modzelewski and Brittany Wiberg contributed a basket. Stephanie Suhoza, Kristen Tanner and Carolyn Fagan sparked the defense.

GIRLS 6TH

 

WEST HAVEN 40, NEWTOWN 19: The girls played good defense and rebounded well, but couldn’t make their shots in the first round of the Monroe Tournament. Nora Lynn Shimko led the scoring with 10 points. Rachele Cox and Kelsey Hopper led the rebounding with seven apiece and Cox also contributed three points to the scoring effort. Kaila Harrington also played well with strong defense and rebounding.

BOYS 6TH

 

NEWTOWN 46, BROOKFIELD 32: Newtown opened up an eight-point lead at halftime, and then smothered Brookfield defensively in the thirrd quarter, holding them to three points. Newtown again had a balanced offensive attack, with nine of 10 players scoring on the day. Newtown picked up its 18th win of the season. Kurt Nacewicz and John Grimaldi combined for 19 points while Chris Marks, Keith McGrath, Cole Depuy and Connor Collier combined for 22. Dan Quinn, Ian Cooper, and Rick Gallucci rounded out the scoring for Newtown. Andrew Meisel played well on both the defensive and offensive end of the court.

GIRLS 7TH

 

NEWTOWN 44, DANBURY 29: Tough defense led Newtown to the win. Morgan Knees scored 20 points (16 of those in the second half) and dragged down seven rebounds to lead the Hawks to the win. Caitlin O’Handley added seven points and nine rebounds and Katie Condon chipped in with seven points.

NEWTOWN 56, EASTON 28: Caitlin O’Handley had 14 points and eight rebounds as Newtown concluded the regular season at 14-6. Harriet Morgan had 10 points and three steals and Hannah Tenenbaum had eight points. Morgan Knees and Bridie Rubino combined for 12 points.

BOYS 7TH

NEWTOWN 74, NORTH SALEM 56: Dylan Clark, Kevin Troy, Mike Maher and Jason Smith combined for 43 points to lead Newtown. PJ Cochrane, Matt Boland and Dan Smith played very well on both ends of the court.

NEWTOWN 53, SOUTHBURY 50 (OT): Two evenly matched teams squared off in a defensive battle. Greg Rodden and Kevin Troy combined for 27 points and were outstanding on both ends of the floor. Dan Giorno scored five points in overtime and played a strong defensive game. Bob Lapple, Dan Smith and Jason Smith played superb defense and forced a number of turnovers.

NEWTOWN 46, WESTPORT 45: A tight defensive battle from the opening tip, Newtown secured the victory with a clutch 14-foot jumper by Jason Smith with 21 seconds left in the game. Greg Rodden scored 15 points and Jason and Dan Smith combined for 20. Dylan Clark was strong off the boards and Matt Boland played a fine overall game.

DANBURY 61, NEWTOWN 56: Newtown was down by 15 points early in the third quarter, but came back to tie the score with four minutes left. Kevin Troy, Greg Rodden and Jason Smith led the comeback combining for 35 points. Dan Smith, PJ Cochrane and Dan Giorno were outstanding defensively and led the team in rebounding.

DANBURY 46, NEWTOWN 42: Newtown played back-to-back games with Danbury and the game came down to the final minute. Mike Maher was outstanding, scoring nine points and leading the team in steals. Bob Lapple, Kevin Troy and Dan Giorno were all over the court and combined for 23 points.

BOYS 8TH

 

NEWTOWN 61, REDDING 46: The Redhawks led throughout the game and held Redding to only 15 points at the half. Mike Tibbetts led the way with 17, followed by Tad Pierson with 15 and Dan Murdoch with 11. Ryan McGrath, Max Reid, Tucker Cass and Brian Cullinan all played solid defense and helped to round out the scoring on the day.

GIRLS 8TH

 

MONROE 38, NEWTOWN 30: Poor shooting doomed Newtown in the semi-finals of the Keegan Memorial Tournament in Monroe. Amy Kelley, Jen Mariani and Jill Logan combined for 24 points while Kelley and Logan combined with Darcy Fiscella for 20 rebounds. Fiscella and Logan came up with three rebounds apiece.

NEWTOWN 30, TRUMBULL 27: Darcy Fiscella and Jen Mariani scored nine points apiece as Newtown edged Trumbull and finished in third in the Keegan Memorial Tournament in Monroe. Christie Iwanicki chipped in with six points while Jill Logan grabbed 10 rebounds. Amy Kelley and Sam Wong combined to pull down 12 boards while Fiscella had five steals.
