The Senior Gold squad rolled over some of the stateâs best teams to capture the second annual Rooster Rumble at Treadwell Park. The girls defeated Southbury (6-3), New Fairfield (6-0), Wakeman (4-3) and Cheshire (6-2) in pool play before topping Darien (3-2) in the semi-finals and Glastonbury Select (5-3) in the championship.
Newtown Gold 3, Darien (8A) 2 â Liz Emerson and Kaitlyn Vos Winkel scored the goals that lifted Newtown past Darien in the Rooster Rumble semifinals. Meredith Bridges and Erin Brown provided the assists. Nicole Gindraux, Kelly OâConnor, Maggie Korth and Jocelyn Toll anchored the defense. Jill Jagoe made five saves in the cage.
Newtown Gold 5, Glastonbury Select 3 â Newtown controlled nearly every draw and dominated the ground ball game to defeat previously unbeaten Glastonbury. Shannon âPicklesâ Paproski made some amazing saves in the goal while the defense was once again stifling, stopping repeated comeback attempts. Katie Canavanâs quickness proved impossible to contain while she slashed her way to through the Glastonbury defense for two goals. Kaitlin Brophy added two more and Molly Mahony had one as well.
Regular season â
Darien (7A) 8, Newtown Gold 7 (OT) â After Sarah Attanasio scored the go-ahead goal in the final minute, Darien responded with 15 seconds left in regulation and with 30 seconds left in overtime to earn the win. Jill Jagoe and Shannon Paproski combined for 12 saves in the cage. Kaitlin Brophy, Meredith Bridges, Molly Mahony and Kaitlyn Vos Winkel also scored.
SENIOR BOYS
Wilton (8A) 7, Newtown Gold 4 â Will Northropâs two first quarter goals kept the game close at halftime, but the home town boys were not able to keep pace with the storied Wilton offense as they fell in a tuneup game for the weekendâs CONNY tournament. Connor Byrne played well all over the field and scored a goal as Kyle Vignone was a defensive force at midfield. Lewis Thompson scored a man-up goal off a super feed from MIke Zaccaro and Colby Summerlin assisted Northrop on his first goal to spark the offense. Josh Freitas was a standout on clears.
CONNY Tournament â
Cheshire Black 9, Newtown Gold 8 â Newtown fell victim to defensive lapses and allowed Cheshire to prevail. Will Northrop (2), Connor Byrne, Kyle Vignone, Colby Summerlin, Connor Halloran, Lewis Thompson and Mike Zaccaro all scored but the Gold fell to Cheshire. Summerlin had a pair of assists while Thompson and Ryan Korth had one apiece.
Newtown Gold 12, Westport A 4 â The offensive fireworks were on display for Newtown fans in the CONNY Silver bracket consolation game as five players scored three points each, led by Colby Summerlin, who ignited the offensive outburst with his high energy play, scoring twice and adding an assist. Ryan Korth won 11 face-offs and had three assists. Lewis Thompson had two goals and an assist, Kyle Vignone had a goal and two assists, and Mike Zaccaro scored three goals. Will Northrop scored two goals, CJ Ryan scored a goal and had an assist, Danny Sclafani scored a goal and Tom Murphy had an assist.

Eli Jamboree â

The Newtown Gold captured seven wins at the Eli Jamboree as the defense shut down the offenses of Westport, New Canaan, Ridgefield, Guilford, Tigerlax, Stonington and Groton. Goalie Evan Isaacs and his supporting cast of James Marusi, Brian Kruger, Tom Bauer and Jack Kearney completed a shutout after seven grueling games. Commanding the midfield with relentless desire was Dan Hebert, Phil Reynolds, Jacob Newton-Tanzer, Pat Capozziello, Stefan Dullinger, Tyler Hanley, Chris Erickson, Parker Rodbell and Alec Beauchemin. The strong attack group was Connor Quinn, Ian Whaley, Graham Derrickson and Cody Ryan.
CONNY Tournament â

Darien (6A) 8, Newtown Gold 1 â A rocky start early on Saturday was Newtownâs undoing â as a talented Darien team jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back. Good hustle and physical play by Patrick Capozziello and Tyler Hanley kept Newtown competitive despite the score. Parker Rodbell and Danny Hebert repeatedly drove hard to the cage but other than Hebertâs second half goal, Newtown was unable to crack the Darien defense.
Newtown Gold 4, John Jay (6A) 2 â The second game of the tournament saw Newtown mount a second half comeback to defeat their rivals from New York state. Scoring came from James Marusi (one goal, two assists), Danny Hebert (one goal), Graham Derrickson (one goal), and Alec Beauchemin (one goal). Strong defensive efforts by Brian Kruger and Jack Kearney in support of goalie Evan Isaacs (twelve saves) made the difference in the second half.

Newtown Gold 10, Madison 9 â Newtown raced to a quick four-goal lead only to see Madison come to life and make the game close. Michael Braddick, Bubba Condon, Logan Walsh, and Conrad Morris dominated the face offs as Andrew Tousignant and CJ Dunn scored important goals for Newtown. Jake Lambert and Robby Lasher were solid between the pipes.
Newtown Gold 3, New Fairfield 2 â Matt Bouton and Brandon Powell led the offense as Newtown slipped past New Fairfield. Robby Lasher and Bradley Kretz shared goaltending duties in the first half and made some great saves. Colin Reilly, CJ Dunn and Christian Hoffman anchored the D. Bubba Condon and Logan Walsh won the battle of the groundball.

Navy 6, Dartmouth 3 â In a well played mach of skills Chris Hartley, Max Weber, and Adam Weber scooped several ground balls to help Navy. Zachary Goodridge returned to the Navy roster helping tie up the Dartmouth attack. Dartmouth was led by Clay Gattey who was all over the field scooping 5 groundballs. Austin LeBlanc, Sam Cox and Michael Cook all scored goals to keep the game close..
Harvard 8, Carolina 4 â Harvard played a great team game and passed the ball effectively. Scott McLean hustled hard and made several outstanding plays on offense. Jeremy Doski scored a few goals to lead the offense. Matt Hess, in his goalie debut, made several nice saves. Carolina was led by Grant Goodridge and Nick Rubino who played well on both ends of the field. Patrick Conte and Patrick Heinlein put in strong offensive efforts to keep the score close.
Hofstra 4, Syracuse 2 â Hofstra was led by Doug Main, who played the entire game in goal and made many quality saves. Arron Becket and Colin Theis controlled the ground balls and led the Syracuse attack. Matt Elais played well on defense and kept the syracuse offense at bay. Syracuse was led by Christian Morlock who played hard on both ends of the field. Sean McCafferty and Ethan Marsh played hard on defense to keep Hofstra away from the crease.
