Mavs Win March Mayhem Tourney

The fourth-grade Connecticut Mavericks of Newtown were crowned the champions of the March Mayhem Tournament held last weekend at Newtown Youth Academy. The Mavs were a perfect 4-0 in this third/fourth grade tourney.

On Saturday, the Mavs defeated Danbury 33-18. C.J. Trivers played big in the paint, scoring a game high 10 points. Chris Maturo had the range from the corner, scoring 6. Thomas Luciano (2 points) and Charile Asetta (4 points) played strong defense.

After a ten minute rest, the Mavs went out and recorded an impressive 36-16 victory over Cheshire. Trevor Tyrell (11 points) and Riley McCafferty (6 points) dished several assists from the point position. Danny Schreiber, Asetta, and Maturo each scored 4 points.

Returning on Sunday, the Mavs faced their toughest challenge against Newtown’s third grade Mavs squad. Trailing by as many as seven points early, the fourth-grade Mavs turned up the defensive pressure in the second half and took the lead with less then five minutes remaining, holding on for a thrilling 19-16 victory. Shea Talbot (3 points), Trivers (4 points), and Tyrell (8 points) were the catalysts in the comeback, as they made several steals down the stretch.

In the championship game, the Mavs were too much in a rematch with Danbury, winning 40-19. McCafferty and Schreiber were strong on the offensive boards, scoring 10 and 7 points, respectively.  Tyrell had another fine game at the point, scoring  11. Talbot was a ball of fury at both ends of the court and scored 5. Luciano made several sharp passes from the wing and tallied 3 points. Throughout the tourney, an injured Jack Hannan cheered his team on from the bench. The team is coached by Ted Hannan and John McCafferty.
