Upcoming Continuing Education Courses
Newtownâs Continuing Education Director Elissa Gellis announced the upcoming courses being offered for costs ranging from $39 to $99. Deadlines to register for courses are one week before the start of the each program.
City Lights of Manhattan is a day trip to Manhattan on December 5.
âEnjoy a festive lunch at Mont Blanc Restaurant. You will take a two-hour guided riding tour of Manhattanâs holiday lights with stops along the way to see the tree at Rockefeller Center, Fifth Avenue windows, Lincoln Center and more. You will spend some time in the morning at the Holiday Shops at Bryant Park with over 100 boutiques, artisans, designers and food vendors from around the world,â the description reads.
The trip will depart from Newtown High School at 10:30 am and the fee is $89.
Excel Part 1, will be offered for $89 over the course of three Mondays, starting November 1, from 6:30 pm until 9 pm.
âLearn to use one of the most powerful spreadsheet programs on the market today. Learn to design and use spreadsheets, formulas, functions, number, date and text formatting, sorting, and many more features. Basic computer skills are required,â the description reads.
The following course, Excel Part 2, will begin on Monday, November 29, and will again cost $89 for three courses.
Sewing, Garment Alteration, will be offered over six Mondays starting November 1 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm and will cost $99.
âYou will learn the proper technique for hemming jeans, pants and skirts and you will take in the waist band of dress pants and skirts. Button attachment will also be taught as well as other projects as time permits. You can bring your own machine or a rental can be supplied,â the description reads.
Ms Gellis said the Sewing, Garment Alteration course will be taught by Sandy Hook resident Mary Villa, formerly of Newtown Curtains, and now Ethan Allen soft goods specialist.
The Fun With Family Photos course will help attendees sort and organize photos, according to Ms Gellis. âBring at least 3,000 of our photos, and the instructor shows you how to organize them in three hours,â Ms Gellis said.
The course fee is $39 and will cover the one class on November 11 from 7 pm until 10 pm.
The Interior and Exterior Decorating Using the Art of Feng Shui will be offered over two classes on Wednesday and Thursday, November 10 and November 11, from 6 pm until 9 pm. The course fee is $59.
How to Build a Fun and Profitable Home-based Business will be offered on Tuesday, November 16, from 6 pm until 9 pm for $49.
Floral Design: Thanksgiving Centerpiece will be offered âby our very own Kristin Violette,â Ms Gellis said of the Newtown High School teacher.
The course will be offered on Tuesday, November 23, from 6:30 to 8 pm for $59, and the fee includes all materials.
Ms Gellis said Ms Violette will show attendees how to create a centerpiece that is ânot too high, not too low, and how to fill it in with greens.â
According to the course description, the âparticipants will learn the basics of floral design while creating an arrangement of seasonal flowers, babyâs breath, wheat and fern.â
