KNIGHTS 5, MIDDLETOWN 2 (STATE CUP): The Knights squared off against unbeaten powerhouse Middletown Saturday in third round State Cup action. Newtown used ball control and expert passing by midfielders Danny Kearns, Marc Doherty, Jeff Lipnick, Noah Kugielsky and Jonathan Hartlett to keep the opposition off balance and set -up scoring chances for the forwards. Down by one early the Knights let loose the jets. Max Barrett powered through the defense and surprised the goalie with a shot to the corner for Newtownsâ first. That goal turned the momentum as Newtown put up four more unanswered goals. Alex Meisel used his speed to ring up two goals, Barrett put another one in for his second and Scott Kohn finished off Middletown with a blast to the back of the net and send the Knights into the Sweet Sixteen of the tournament.
KNIGHTS 5, SOUTHBURY 1: For the second day in a row Newtown scored five goals in a game and posted another victory. After Southbury scored an early goal, Newtownsâ defensemen Matt Taylor, Dave McLaughlin, Will Brooks, Alister Ratcliff and goalie Louis Ritzinger stepped up their smothering style of play and kept the opposition off the board for the rest of the day. The defensive wall put up by Newtown created numerous scoring chances and the Knights wasted no time. Chris Hoagland put two goals in, Alex Meisel and Max Barrett got the next two and Alex Naldini gathered in a pass, faked out his defenseman and snuck in a left-footer to seal the win.
KNIGHTS 3, NEW CANAAN 1 (STATE CUP): The Knights registered a 3-1 victory against a speedy New Canaan team in fourth round State Cup action. The difference in the match was the outstanding play of goalkeeper Louis Ritzinger, who kept the club in the game with many outstanding saves. The Knights move into the quarterfinals for the first time in the clubsâ young history. New Canaan came out strong at the whistle, pressuring the Knights, but both teams went into the half tied after Danny Kearns gobbled up a pass in front and put it into the net for the equalizer. In the second half, the Knights came alive to battle for the match by putting pressure up front and creating scoring chances. David McLaughlin lofted a beautiful shot over the goalie for the go-ahead goal and Chris Hoagland caught the goalie out of position for the teamâs third goal. Ritzinger needed to make only one more stellar save in the final minutes to preserve the win.

NAVIGATORS 6, TORRINGTON 1: After being carried by the goaltending of Bethany Morin the past two weeks, the Navigators forwards took control of the game right away and let the offense do the work. Caroline Kraitch and Katie Kirrane set the tone early. Kraichâs refusal to allow Torrington to move the ball out of their end resulted in a turnover, which Kirrane pounded on for the first goal. Ashley Braun and Julie Landin provided the Navigators with solid efforts in the midfield throughout the match. The Navigators built an early 4-0 lead and played ball control for much of the second half. Rachel Maley, Alana Bilangi, Dana Schunter, Harriet Morgan and Julie Landin each added a goal while Christie Attanasio, Claire Ober and Jaclyn Petrasanta played solid defense.

BROOKFIELD 4, AFTERSHOCK 0: Brookfield avenged an indoor loss during the winter season by defeating the Aftershock 4-to-0 at Brookfield on May 14. The home team opened the scoring early, driving home a high kick following a scramble in front of the net, and added two more goals shortly before the half. Eight minutes into the second half, Ethan Canfield nearly closed the gap after dribbling unassisted through several Brookfield defenders, but his sharply-angled shot banged off the goalpost. Brookfield then added a clincher with a deep kick into the top of the net, shortly before the end. Thanks to the dribbling of Sam Morrison, the Aftershock controlled the ball through much of the game despite their inability to score. Ryan Drummond sparkled on defense for the Aftershock with spectacular steals and blocks.

STARS 2, DYNAMITES 1: Biz Bowen struck first for the Stars, a team outnumber by a Dynamite squad that simply would not quit, played as they had never played before. Chrissy Glander scored for the Dynamites, while a very sticky defense allowed Star offensive charges from Katie Mayer and Jessica Paynter no clean shots and goalie Christie Daniels neatly parried whatever leaked through, ending the half in deadlock. After intermission, play started much the same. An aggressive Star defense of Alicia Rogers and Maggie Thoreson pinned the ball near the Dynamite net and Bethany Oberâs steel-nerved goaltending blunted escaping Dynamite charges, paced by Lindsay Beck and Mandy Black, with quick, booming clear kicks that underscored the Starsâ last line of defense as their first of offense. Finally, in the waning minutes of a now rain-dampened game Star forward Lauren Egdahl, who had helped turn the Dynamite goal into an apparently ball-repellant shooting gallery, evaded Jackie Gutbrodâs taffy-like defense to feed Biz Bowenâs shooting foot yet another ball. That shot, too, was deflected, only its backspin somehow carried it in a crazily meandering path across the goal line to end scoring for the game . . . and send an ebullient, albeit entirely winded, Star squad to the ice cream parlor.
STRIKERS 5, CHEETAHS 0: Courtney Brunton, Elizabeth Gugino and goaltender Allison Kurk led the Strikers on to victory. Katie Berliner, Mary Ellen Sloan and Lindsey Chimileski all had strong offensive games for the Cheetahs.
