Residents Fare Well

In Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER — Newtown fire companies brought home two awards for their marching efforts and a handful of Newtown residents won honors during last weekend’s Bridgewater Country Fair.

Presented from Friday, August 17, through Sunday, August 19, this year’s was the 56th staging of the weekend event coordinated by Bridgewater Volunteer Fire Department. The fair, a major fundraiser for the all-volunteer fire company, opened on Friday with its traditional Firemen’s Parade.

Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company and its Auxiliary was presented the Porges Trophy, representing Best Overall Company, at the conclusion of the parade. This was the second consecutive win in that category for Sandy Hook.

Also winning a trophy this year was United Fire Company of Botsford, which won Best Appearing Company 15 Or Under.

Sandy Schill was the blue ribbon winner in the Vegetable and Fruit Exhibit for her celery, Rob Sibley won the blue ribbon in the sugar pumpkin class, and Laura Duffy won for pump tomatoes.

Photographer Art Anderson was the first place winner in the Senior Photography — Black and White competition.

Three residents were top winners in Needlework competitions: Ethel Meadows of Botsford won a trophy and first place honors for Division 1 (Sewing), Class 3/Smocked Dress; Tara Foster finished in first place in Division 2 (Embroidery), Class 2/Bedspread; and Christine Foster also won a first place, for Division 2, Class 3/Afghan.

Willard Heimstra took home Best in Show honors for his entry in the Hobbies competition, Senior Division, Class 3 (handmade), and Cheri Fickett earned a trophy in the same class.

Young residents also did well this year. Carley Ferris received Best in Show and first honors in the Junior Division of Needlework for her machine quilted quilt.

Sean Ferris earned a first place ribbon for Junior Needlework, Class II/Wall Hanging — Machine, and Carley Ferris received second place honors for that class.

Kayla Boland of Sandy Hook received a trophy for her entry in the Junior Hobbies, Class 7/Dioramas & Dollhouses, and William Brady received a first place ribbon for his entry in Junior Hobbies, Class 8/Legos.
