Newtown High School Lacrosse, Tennis, Track And Golf Wrap-Up
Newtown High Schoolâs boysâ and girlsâ lacrosse teams are coming off lopsided wins, the tennis teams rebounded from defeats to Weston to topple Bethel, several track team members had standout performances and the golf team suffered its first conference loss of the campaign during this past weekâs action. Here are some of the highlights:
Â
Girlsâ Lacrosse Team Piling Up Goals
The Newtown High School girlsâ lacrosse team had its second and third 20-goal performances of the season in a 20-5 win over Masuk at home on April 30 and a 20-2 thumping of Notre Dame-Fairfield on the road on May 1.
The Nighthawks improved to 7-1 overall heading into Wednesdayâs scheduled game at Lauralton Hall (after The Bee sports section went to press).
The Hall game was the first of four in as many days, in part as a result of makeup dates caused by rain. On Thursday, the Hawks were scheduled to host Glastonbury, on Friday Stratford will come to Treadwell Park and on Saturday NHS will visit Pomperaug High.
Newtown has outscored opponents 144-65. Betsy Vendel leads the team with 32 goals and 18 assists,
Kaitlin Brophy has 25 goals and 12 assists, Lisa Vendel has netted 23 goals and assisted on 5 tallies and Meghan Bridges has 18 goals and 13 assists.
Through the month of April, Newtownâs defensive leaders are Annie Fletcher with 13 ground balls and 9 caused turnovers, and Stephanie Suhoza and Kirsten Hudock who have combined for 20 ground balls and 14 forced turnovers.
Boysâ Lacrosse Team Wins Easily
The boysâ lacrosse team went to Masuk High and routed the Panthers 19-4 on April 30 behind the efforts of 11 goal-scorers. Kevin Canavan led the way with a four-goal outburst. Dylan Huebner, Colby Summerlin, Tim Dalton, Jaime Vavrek and Christian Beitel all notched a pair of tallies.
The Nighthawks had a week away from game action before being scheduled to visit Bethel on Thursday. NHS will host Pomperaug on Friday.
