Umbrellas Raise Funds For Scholarships

Umbrellas decorated with the flagpole are being sold by the Business and Professional Women (BPW) as a fundraiser for scholarships for women in Newtown.

“A fundraiser item is always a difficult choice to make, but this year was different,” said Laura Mayer, BPW co-president. “The [BPW] board just happened to have their annual fundraising meeting one week after the September 11 attacks on our country. [The flag] is not only a symbol of the town but a symbol of America and freedom during this difficult time in our history. The Newtown flagpole was destined to be the artwork that was to be proudly placed on the umbrella.”

 The umbrella is navy and white with a wooden handle. The cost is $20. The umbrellas can be purchased at Lexington Gardens and Newtown Savings Bank. Large quantities can be purchased by calling Jeanne Malota of JMM Events at 426-0162.

BPW is a nonprofit organization that promotes the interests of business and professional women. The organization sponsors scholarships to help women who are changing or advancing their careers.
