After missing qualifying for the United States’ team that competed in the World Age Group Triathlon Championships a year ago by just one place, Steve Braun of Sandy Hook set his sights on this year’s trials.

And this time there was no disappointment.

Last Saturday, he qualified for the team with a fifth place finish in an Olympic distance triathlon in Lake Placid, New York. The event, which is one of the most rigorous in sports, consists of a 1,500 meter (nearly a mile) swim, followed by a 40 kilometer (24.8 miles) bike and a 10 kilometer (6.2 mile) run.

The top 14 triathletes in the country in each age group will represent USA Triathlon at the International Triathlon Union World Championships in November in Cancun, Mexico. Braun is a member of the Wolf Pack Triathlon Club and trains under the tutelage of Eric Hodska in bicycling and running and Al Dodson in swimming.

Both coaches agree that Steve is one of the most dedicated and coachable athletes that they know.
