Tennis Teams Finish Regular Season Strongly, Compete In Postseason
Newtown High School's girls' and boys' tennis teams closed out their regular season of play against South-West Conference foes on a high note, as the girls won seven straight matches before a loss to Weston in the finale on May 12, and the boys won five in a row before embarking on the postseason.
Both squads visited Weston in the SWC tournament semifinals on May 16, and were defeated 7-0. Newtown's third doubles tandem of Sean Bollman and Peter Winans went to a third set tiebreaker before falling.
The boys' squad's final regular season match was a 7-0 win over visiting New Fairfield on May 12. Singles players Joey Conrod and Matt Carino both won 6-0, 6-2, Grant Larson won his match 6-4, 6-2, and Jackson Dooley won 6-1, 6-2. The doubles tandem of James Frazzetta and Justin Oelberg won 6-3, 6-2, the team of Constintine Vogiatzis and Jordan Klein won 6-0, 6-0, and Bollman and Winans came out on top 6-0, 6-1.
Conrod, Carino, and Dooley, along with the doubles teams of James Frazzetta and Oelberg, Vogiatzis and Klein, and Bollman and Matt Frazzetta all qualified for the SWC individual tourney, scheduled for May 23-24, at Immaculate High in Danbury.
The girls were scheduled to get back to regular-season play with a makeup match against nonconference team Fairfield Ludlowe, on Thursday, May 19, at 4 p.m., before continuing the postseason with the SWC individual tourney and state tournament action just around the corner.
In their SWC finale, May 11 at New Fairfield, a 6-1 triumph, Lauren Beier won 6-0, 6-0, Amanda Berry won 6-1, 6-0, Anna Biondi won 6-2, 6-2, and Gabby Reisert prevailed 6-0, 6-4; in doubles play, the team of Tessa Leon-Gambetta and Sophie Wolfman won 6-2, 6-1, and the team of Anika Dholakia and Hayley Lambert came out on top 6-2, 6-4.
