Albert Raymond Smith, Jr, 87, of Roxbury, formerly of Stratford, died April 24 in his home. Born in Stratford, he was a lifelong resident before moving to Roxbury 21 years ago. He was the son of the Albert R. Smith, Sr, and Dorothy Wood Smith.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Jean E. Hayes Smith; a son, Dunham H. Smith and his wife, Rebecca, of Newtown; three daughters, Suzanne Elizabeth Kallmann and her partner, Eric Cummings, of Lenox, Mass., Deborah Ledgard Hunt and her husband, Geoff, of Ipswich, Mass., and Melissa Warner Mason and her husband, Bruce, of Norwich, Vt.; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was a graduate of Stratford High School and the American Institute of Banking and worked for the Connecticut National Bank in Bridgeport for 46 years before his retirement as vice president. Mr Smith was secretary, treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Stratford Library from 1965 to 1967, and was past treasurer of Christ Episcopal Church in Stratford. Also, he was a life member of the Maine Nature Conservancy, a member of the board of directors of the Roxbury Land Trust, trustee of the Katherine B. Mitchell Scholarship Trust in Stratford from 1958 to 2003 and was a 32nd degree Mason with America St John 8, AF&AM in Stratford.
Mr Smith had an insatiable curiosity and love of life and always had a good word to say about everyone he met. He loved his family and loved to travel with his wife, Jean, visiting some of the most interesting places in the world. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
Friends are invited to attend a funeral service on Saturday, April 29, at noon in the Dennis & DâArcy Funeral Home, 2611 Main Street, Stratford, with the Rev John Miller, Rector of the Christ Episcopal Church in Roxbury, officiating. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery. Friends may greet the family Saturday morning from 11 am to 12 pm prior to services. A Eucharist service will be held in the Christ Episcopal Church in Roxbury at a later date to be announced.
