Track Squads Led By Russo And Godfrey In State Championships

NEW HAVEN - Led by runner-up finishes in pole vault and shotput events, Newtown High School's indoor track and field teams competed in the Class LL State Championships, at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven, on February 15.

The girls' squad placed 11th with 14 points and the boys were 15th with nine points. Danbury won both team competitions, with the girls scoring 64 points and the boys racking up 116.

Lauren Russo was second in the pole vault competition, clearing the bar at 11 feet to score eight points.

Jack Godfrey was second in the shotput event with a finals round throw of 48' 7.75", for eight points.

Marley Marston was fifth in the shotput event with a toss of 34-09.75 for two points.

Carly Swierbut was fifth in the 55 meter dash, sprinting to the finish in 7.60 seconds for two points.

The 4x200 relay team of Makenna Cerney, Emma Curtis, Grace Pettinelli and Carly Swierbut was fifth in 1:51.51 for two more points.

Cerney was 16th in the 300 with a time of 44.76. Lu Hage placed ninth in the 3200, clocking in at 11:59.19.

The 4x800 relay contingent of Maddie Findley, Hage, Erin Tressler,and Camille Johnson placed eighth in 10:21.14.

Newtown's 1600 sprint medley relay squad, comprising Curtis, Pettinelli, Findley and Johnson, finished in 13th place with a time of 4:46.16.

Brett Deri placed sixth in the 55 hurdles in 8.38 seconds for one point.

Kevin Arther was 13th in the 300 with a time of 38.09. In the 1000, Joel Duval placed seventh in 2:43.37, and Christian Lestik came in tenth in 2:45.85.

Brenden Reeds was 17th in the 1600 with a time of 4:48.34.

The 4x200 team of Deri, Adam Manes, Arther and Cormac Roe was ninth in 1:37.56.

Newtown's 4x400 team of Michael Meyer, Dylan Lew, Duval and Arther was 12th in 3:43.86.

The sprint medley relay grouping of Rory Edwards, Roe, Todd Perrin and Lestik came in 12th in 3:57.78.

In the high jump competition, Zach Crebbin cleared 5'8" to finish eighth.

Dylan Bartlett placed eighth in the pole vault event, getting over the bar at 10'6".

Manes was ninth in the long jump with a leap of 19' 4.75".
