Summer Camp For Middle Schoolers

By Tanjua Damon

Newtown Youth Services is offering a nontraditional six-week summer camp from students who have completed fifth through eighth grade. The camp will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from July 8 through August 14.

The camp will allow students to see sites in Connecticut as well as other New England states on day trips. The youth agency wanted to be able to provide something for students at the middle school level since most programs do not reach this particular age level.

In collaboration with the Newtown Park & Rec Department, Youth Services has created a program that allows parents to send their children every Tuesday and Thursday or pick and chose what days they want their children to participate. Each day approximately 40 children can go on each day trip. It will be on a first come, first served basis.

The program includes the following trips:

*July 8 –– Hike/Orienteering, $20.

*July 10 –– Beach Day at Sherwood Island, $20.

*July 15 –– Golf Quest, $23.

*July 17 –– Beach Day at Hammonassett, $22

*July 22 –– Six Flags, $50

*July 24 –– Beach Day at Sherwood Island, $20.

*July 29 –– Pine Lake Ropes Course, $35.

*July 31 –– Beach Day at Hammonassett, $22.

*August 5 –– Splashdown, $32.

*August 7 –– Beach Day at Sherwood Island, $20.

*August 12 –– Lake Compounce, $33.

*August 14 –– End of Summer Extravaganza at Dickinson Park, $10.

“This is a great way to get involved and get out of Newtown for youth,” Mr Rosen said. “It’s an alternative.”

The agency hopes to have something planned for high school students as well this summer.

All programs leave from Newtown Youth Services. The fees include transportation and admission. To get more details or to register contact Matt Rosen at 270-4335 at NYS.
