The Newtown seventh-grade girlsâ traveling basketball team dropped a 55-30 decision to Monroe in the semi-finals of the Ridgefield Tournament last week and finished the 2002-03 season with a 16-8 record.
Newtown reached the semis with wins over Danbury PAL (26-20) and Mohansic (43-36), while suffered a loss to Ridgefield (46-25).
In the win over Danbury PAL, Kelley Tenney had eight points while Katie Kirrane, Caitlin OâHandley, Hannah Tennebaum and Katie Condon had four points apiece. In the loss to Ridgefield, which snapped an eight-game win streak, Condon had eight points while Morgan Knees and Kirrane had four points apiece.
In the win over Mohansic, Knees scored 17 points as Condon and Tenney chipped in with six apiece. Harriet Morgan had eight steals. And in the loss to Monroe, Knees had eight points, Tenney had five points and two steals, and OâHandley had five points and nine rebounds.
Despite the loss, it was a fine season for Newtown â which turned a 6-19 record in 2001-02 to a 16-8 record in 2002-03.
