Travel Basketball Coaches

Coaches for all age levels, 5th through 8th grade (girls and boys), are needed for the Newtown Parks and Recreation travel basketball program. Anyone interested should call John Giorno at 270-9579. Also, a tournament for travel basketball players is being organized and anyone interested in helping should call Mr Giorno or Jack Shpunt at 426-1935.

 

Swim Coaches Needed

Newtown High School is in need of a girls’ (fall season) and boys’ (winter season) swim coach for the 2001 and 2001-2002 seasons. Anyone interested in coaching should call Newtown High athletic director Gregg Simon at 426-7655 as soon as possible.

 

Nighthawk Golf Classic

The first annual Nighthawk Baseball Golf Classic will be held Monday, August 13, at 8 am, at Whitney Farms Golf Course in Monroe. The fee is $125 and includes 18 holes of golf with cart and luncheon at Porky’s Café in Shelton. There will also be a raffle, featuring a $500 gift certificate to Golfer’s Warehouse. To register a foursome, call coach John Larkins at 1-203-922-1756. Anyone wishing to sponsor a hole ($100) should also call coach Larkins at 1-203-922-1756.

New Milford Road Race

The 34th annual New Milford 8-Mile Road Race will be held Saturday, July 28, at 9:30 am (rain or shine). More than $2,150 in prize money will be available. T-shirts will be given to the first 475 registered runners, with goody-filled race packets and course entertainment available. Pre-entry is $17 (postmarked Wednesday, July 18) and post-entry is $20. Race-day registration will be from 8 to 9 am. Call New Milford Parks and Recreation at 1-860-355-6050 for further information.

MLS Soccer Camp

The Newtown Soccer Club will once again host the MLS Soccer Camp, which will run from July 30 through August 3, and is open for players ages 5 to 12. Cost is $84 and that includes shirt and soccer ball. Brochures will be available from soccer coaches and at the Booth Library (outside lobby of children’s room, on bench). Host families will also be needed for visiting coaches. Call Anne Rosa at 426-6416 for further information.

Fall Ball Registrations

Newtown Babe Ruth Baseball Fall Ball Registration is under way. If you have not received a registration form, you may print the form from the Newtown Babe Ruth’s website (www.eteamz.com/newtownbaseball). Cost and mailing information are located on the form. Forms will also be located at Booth library. Children, aged 6-15 are eligible.  Games are played on Saturdays and Sundays beginning the weekend after Labor Day. The last day registration forms will be accepted is July 28th.

Calhoun Basketball Camp

The Jim Calhoun Basketball Camp for boys ages 9 to 17 will be held at the University of Connecticut in Storrs. The session will run from July 27-29 (for high school players only). The camp hosts overnight and day campers. Campers will receive a free basketball, t-shirt, meals and top-flight instruction from high school and college coaches – as well as the UConn coaching staff. Women’s Slo-Pitch Tourney

A Women’s Slo-Pitch Softball Tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday, August 11 and 12, in Naugatuck. Each team will play at least two games. Call Bill Grabowski at 1-860-589-9653 for further information.

Charity Softball

The casts of The Producers, on of the hottest shows on Broadway, will play each other in a charity softball game on Monday, August 13, at 6:30 pm, at Frank DeLuca Field in Stratford, to benefit Swim Across The Sound. Mathew Broderick, Cady Huffman, Gary Beach, and Ron Bart are scheduled to play while Nathan Lane will coach. Sara Jessica Parker, Broderick’s wife, may be on hand. Tickets are $5 and a limited number of $50 VIP tickets (including postgame cookout with the cast) are available. Call 576-5451 for general admission and 209-1613 for VIP tickets.

Pomperaug Golf Classic

The second annual Pomperaug Community Golf Tournament will be held Monday, October 22, at Heritage Village in Southbury, to benefit the Christian youth groups in the area. Last year, more than $5,000 was raised to provide funds to the Pomperaug Community Youth Fund, which supported such projects as a Good Friday overnight, an alcohol-free high school graduation night, and sending a teenager going to the Dominican Republic to help out communities there.
