The Cub Scouts of Pack 270 held their annual Pinewood Derby race on Thursday, January 19, at Middle Gate Elementary School. Racing in the Pinewood Derby has been a Cub Scout tradition for more than 50 years. Since 1953 millions of boys have participated in the event. It is one of the most recognizable and popular events in which a young scout may participate.

Each year, boys, along with the help of their parents, build cars of every description to enter at the local pack competition. The construction of the car is intended to be a parent and son project with the child doing the majority of the work.

Boys spend a great deal of time constructing, painting, decorating, and fine tuning the cars for the race. They fashion a racecar out of a seven-inch, five-ounce block of wood. They attach four small wheels, and may add weights to improve the racing performance.

Each year the top racer in individual Cub Scout Packs is invited to compete in the district championships, which occur in the late spring.

Adam Wielebinski from Pack 270 earned top honors as the “Fastest Scout” and will represent his pack at the district championships. Fifteen other scouts earned trophies from each of the four ranks in Cub Scouting.
