Volunteers Come Out To 'Lose The Litter'
Volunteers Come Out To âLose The Litterâ
By Jan Howard
Newtownâs 14th Lose the Litter Day April 27, sponsored by the Newtown Lions, brought out members of clubs and organizations, families, and individuals to band together to cleanup the townâs roadways of the debris of winter.
Volunteers picked up bags and gloves at Newtown Middle School on the day of the event and some time during the day picked up litter on assigned roads or their own streets. Once collected, the litter was dropped off at the Highway Department.
David Bratz, deputy public works director and assistant town engineer, measured the trash and said three tons were collected. This included tires, old tricycles, broken ladders, and propane tanks.
Members of Brownie Girl Scout Troops 611 and 138, their leaders, and members of their families were pulling refrigerator doors out of the woods abutting Edmond Road.
The Lose the Litter Day was begun by July Holmes and the Newtown Environmental Action Team, which ran the program for the first six years. The Newtown Lions have continued the project in recent years.
The project has always received great support from members of the community.
