Summer Hours

Summer hours are now in effect.

Through September the library will be open on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 am until 8 pm, Tuesday and Saturday from 10 am until 5 pm, and Friday from noon to 5 pm. The library is closed on Sundays during the summer.

Children’s Programs

*Summer reading will kick off on Wednesday, June 30, with “Bubblemania,” a performance by Casey Carle at Reed Intermediate School Cafetorium from 10:30-11:30 am.

Copies of Casey’s book will be on sale the day of the performance. Don’t forget to shop our children’s book sale beginning at 9 am, also in the cafetorium.

Our summer reading program officially begins on June 30 and ends August 4. Children ages 4 through grade 5 may register to participate anytime during the five-week period.

*Super Science Workshops: Teacher and artist Leslie Troy will conduct six science workshops at the library this summer. All workshops require pre-registration and a $6 material fee.

Students entering grades 1 and 2 can participate in workshops that will meet from 1 to 2:30 pm on Thursday afternoons: “To Infinity and Beyond” on July 15, “Dinosaurs Roar!” on July 22, and/or “A World of Science” on July 29.

Students entering grades 3 and 4 can participate in Saturday morning workshops that will meet from 10 am until noon: “Connecting Science and Art” on July 17, “Connecting Science and Literature” on July 24 and/or “Connecting Science and Math” on July 31.

*Real Rescue Heroes: This summer the library is proud to present a new series, “Real Rescue Heroes,” where participants are invited to meet some of the town’s rescue heroes, hear about their work, see some of the equipment they use, and tour their rescue vehicles.

The series is geared for ages 6 and up and while participation is free, pre-registration is required.

“Real Rescue Heroes” will begin on Tuesday, July 20, at 10:30 am, with members of the Newtown Underwater Search And Rescue (NUSAR) team. Additional programs are planned for July 27, also at 10:30, with members of the Newtown Ambulance Corps, and then on August 3, from 11:30 to 12:15, with a Fire Safety program.

Please note there will be two offerings of the Fire Safety program. Children ages 3 to 5 are invited to visit the library on August 3 for their own program starting at 10:30.

*Super Summer Read-Alouds: Bring your lunch and relax as you listen to super stories read aloud by men from Newtown who have volunteered to read a popular children’s book in four consecutive sessions: Monday through Friday, July 12-15, from noon to 1 pm. The readings are for ages 8 and up (no younger siblings, please).

John Renjilian will open the series on Monday when he reads Jennifer Murdley’s Toad, by Bruce Coville. Find out what happens when an ordinary fifth grader purchases an extraordinary talking toad.

*PJ Story Time: Stories, songs and a puppet show will entertain young readers, ages 3 to 7, on Wednesday, July 7, from 6:30 until 7:15 pm. There is no registration required. Don’t forget to wear your favorite PJs!

Young Adults

*Drawing Demonstration: Christopher Hart will lead a drawing demonstration, called “Manga!” on Tuesday, June 29, from 2 to 3:30 pm. This, our first summer program, will be for illustrators ages 10 and up.

Participants will need to bring their own sketch pad and pencils. You are also encouraged to bring some of your own artwork, which Chris will look at and talk about for you.

Chris will also have copies of his books available for purchase during this program. Prices range from $4.50 to $12.50.

*YA Book Discussion: Readers in grades 5 to 8 are invited to join us on Wednesday, June 30, from 4 to 5 pm, for a discussion of Belle Teal by Ann M. Martin. In this Nutmeg Book Award nominee readers join the story as school begins, and Belle Teal faces unexpected challenges: her best friends are up against some big problems, Gran’s memory is slipping away, Mama works longer hours to support the family, and there are two new students in her class.
