Opera Film To Be Shown In Southbury

SOUTHBURY — The opera series sponsored by Southbury Senior Center will continue with a showing of Verdi’s Rigoletto on Thursday, August 18, at 1 pm.

Programs are offered in the Eugene Brown Room of Southbury Public Library at 561 Main Street South. Refreshments will be served.

Filmed on location in Mantua, Italy, in the locale of Verdi’s setting for the opera, the cast includes Luciano Pavoratti as the Duke of Mantua. The role of Rigoletto is sung by Ingvar Wixell, and his daughter, Gilda, is sung by Edita Gruberova, backed by the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Ricardo Chailly.

Pavoratti was at the height of his career at the filming in 1983 and this opera includes some of the most famous arias for the singers as well as stirring drama.
