A Continuing Need––

Social Service Department Accepting Food Donations

By Dottie Evans

The Social Services Department of Newtown is always in need of donations of food items and personal and household products for distribution to Newtown families who are in need.

The department is located on the first floor of Town Hall South off Route 302, and it is open Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 4:30 pm.

The Salvation Army community food pantry is located at the Social Services Department office and the food shelves are continually being restocked. A separate log is started each time a new family comes in for assistance. Since there may be an ongoing need, it is important for food donations to be made on a regular basis, according to department secretary Joanne Klopfenstein.

“For further information about our Salvation Army pantry, people should call Ann Piccini at the Social Services Department office at 270-4330,” Ms Klopfenstein said.

“We also want to point out for clarification sake, that there is another organization in town where free food is collected and distributed –– the FAITH [Food Assistance Immediate Temporary Help] food pantry,” Ms Klopfenstein said.

FAITH Pantry is a joint effort among local churches operated out of St John’s Church in Sandy Hook Center. Its mailing address is c/o Nancy Taylor, 31 Zoar Road, Sandy Hook, CT 06482.
