Bits & Pieces

By Kim J. Harmon

Was that the sun I saw on Tuesday?

Nah, it must have been my imagination. With global warming and the melting of the polar ice caps, North America may never see another sunny day. Lord knows, athletic directors around the state are wondering if the high school spring sports seasons are EVER going to end with all the postponements and rescheduling of games.

The sun – hmmmn. I know it’s yellow and kind of hot and hurts my eyes when I look at it. That much I do remember.

It is the nature of the beast that the Newtown Soccer Club is forced to play its annual Memorial Day Kick Off Soccer Tournament rain or shine. Fortunately, there have only been a few years when rain has marred the event.

Like it did this year.

But the games must go on and there I was on the Newtown Middle School B Field, perched at the corner flag (because, for some reason, I am not allowed to perform my job from behind the goal) and I’m sinking nearly to my shins in the muck (I’m exaggerating – but only a little).

The NSC was certainly beleaguered this year. The high school fields were unavailable because of the reconstruction, the Treadwell Park fields were off limits because of vandalism, and other fields were just soaked beyond belief.

Rain, rain go away, come again blah blah blah …

New Milford held its annual Moonlight Run 5K last weekend and Brian Hennessey of Newtown was the top local finisher, coming in 43rd overall at 17:47 (just about four minutes behind Patrick Nthiwa of Kenya, the winner). Dan Germain (18:51, 67th) and Matt Cole (19:16, 71st), also of Newtown, finished in the top 100.

An 18-year-old kid signs a $90 million shoe contract and I am aghast, but not necessarily surprised. But when a 13-year-old kid signs a $1 million shoe contract then I think I have every right to be aghast (and maybe even appalled). What the heck kind of world is this?

People who listen to baseball games on the radio are at the mercy of the guy behind the mike to draw an accurate picture of the events taking place on the baseball field.

On Monday afternoon, with the New York Yankees battling the Boston Red Sox, John Sterling on 880 makes the call on a smash to centerfield and turns a Hideki Matsui catch into one of the best catches ever made in a baseball game and I’m thinking, wow, I can’t wait to get home and see that!

Tuesday morning, on ESPN Top 10 Plays, there is Matsui chasing a ball down in centerfield.

He slides.

He backhands it.

A nice catch, a good catch, maybe even a very good catch. But the way Sterling was painting it, I expected to see Willie Mays or Jim Edmonds (remember HIS catch?). I felt a little cheated by Sterling, I have to admit.
