State Broadcasters Presenting Workshop At Television News Institute

Two of the state’s top female broadcasters, Kristen Cusato, the morning anchor at WTNH-TV/Channel, and Diane Smith, co-host of “The Ray Dunaway Show with Diane Smith” on WTIC-AM (and a former WTNH reporter), will lead Quinnipiac University School of Communications’ intensive one-week program for high school juniors and seniors in the principles and practices of broadcast journalism this summer. The program will be running July 14–18 from 9 am to 6 pm.

During the program, veteran television news reporters, anchors, and news directors will teach students to write and produce news stories. Students will learn to write effective and balanced news stories; write for the ear — an essential skill in broadcast news. They will also practice shooting video that enhances and supports the report and edit that video on computerized workstations. Instructors will also teach students how to present themselves on camera. Students will learn how to produce stories and taped packages for air and produce a run-down and a live, multicamera newscast.

The week will culminate with a live, half-hour television news program produced in the television studio of the Ed McMahon Mass Communications Center. Students who successfully complete the program will receive a certificate of achievement.

The program costs $475. No overnight accommodations are available; students will be responsible for their own transportation to and from Quinnipiac University each day.
