A Poetry Workshop
For Young Adults
At the request of several young adults, C.H. Booth Library will be offering a poetry workshop this summer. The workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, July 22, from 3 to 4:30 pm.
Aspiring poets age 10 and up or entering fifth grade and higher are welcome whether they are curious beginners or more experienced writers.
The workshop will be led by Thalia Marakas, the author of the collection If Gumdrops Fell Like Raindrops. After talking about the inspiration for her own poems, Ms Marakas will discuss studentsâ favorite poets and poems; discuss various types and styles of poems; talk about which parts of the writing process gives them difficulty, why, and ideas on how to overcome those difficulties; read a few poems from her book; and work with individuals on their own poetry.
A Ridgefield resident, Ms Marakasâ background in writing poetry, teaching, television production and marketing, and documentary filmmaking led her to start her own company, TM Enterprises, LLC, to create and develop âfirst-rate educational materials.â With the collaboration of illustrator Ben Griffin, who was a senior at Ridgefield High School at the time, she finished and published her collection in October 2000.
âI think this book will demonstrate that children really do love poetry,â Ms Marakas reflected that fall. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.
The workshop is limited to 15 participants. Register at the Main Floor circulation desk or call the Booth Library at 426-4533.
