With the grounds all spruced up â a new pavilion, a new surface for the western ring, and improved parking were in evidence â the Second Company Governorâs Horse Guard hosted its annual Horse Show on Sunday, July 20, on its facility at Fairfield Hills.
The show was rated by the Connecticut Horse Show Association, the Connecticut Morgan Horse Association, the Arabian Horse Club of Connecticut, the Connecticut Hunter and Jumper Association and the American Saddle Horse Association and featured driving classes.
Activity was constant throughout the day. A food tent (and merchantâs booths) were available for riders and spectators during the down times.
The annual show is a fund raising event for the Second Company. The horse guard is an all-volunteer state militia unit originally chartered in 1808. A non-profit organization, the guard relies mostly on itâs own fund raising efforts. The guard supports the community by hosting fund raising for St. Judeâs Childrenâs Cancer Research Hospital, local Food Banks, the United Pegasus Foundation for Premarin Foal Rescue as well as itâs own Special Needs riding program called âSaddle up for Lifeâ which serves the special needs adults of Southbury Training School.
New this year for the Second Company is the regularly scheduled mounted patrols of state forests and parks.
Open House
The Second Company Governorâs Horse Guard will hold its annual recruit Open House on Sunday, August 10, at 10 am, at the facilities at Fairfield Hills. Guided tours of the barn will be offered, as well as some information on the history of the Troop and itâs function and mission today.
Applications will be handed out to prospective candidates for the upcoming Recruit Training Class, which will begin this October. The facilities are located just off Exit 11 on I-84, between I-84 and Route 25.
