Newtown Girl Scouts Receive Silver Awards
On June 1 the Girl Scout Council of Southwestern Connecticut honored 11 Silver Award winners from Sandy Hook and Newtown at the 2003 Gold and Silver Award luncheon. The girls were among 66 honored Girl Scouts from the Councilâs 15 Fairfield County towns of Bethel, Brookfield, Danbury, Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan, New Fairfield, Newtown, Norwalk, Redding, Ridgefield, Stamford, Weston, Westport, and Wilton.
The Silver Award recognizes a Cadet Girl Scoutâs completion of specific requirements that culminate in a 30-hour community service project. The Silver Award projects of the 11 Girl Scouts addressed a wide variety of community needs.
Courtney Bonjour, Lauren Ewer, Amanda Roy, Dana TerHaar, and Alicia Tolson were involved in various aspects of researching, writing, acting and filming a Colonial Days Event for Brownies.
Rebecca Gellis built bat houses for the Governors Horse Guard to control mosquitos. Nicole Kaza built wood duck houses for a town park. Stephanie Nordstrom stenciled a large map on a school playground and created a booklet with activities that used the map.
Sarah Hemingway and Lauren Reed collected and donated over 3,500 books for St Maryâs Hospital. Â Jennifer Kessler collected old American flags and held a communitywide disposal ceremony.
