March Madness At Middle School

Newtown Middle School recently held its first Annual March Madness Basketball Tournament.

Ten co-ed teams played a round robin tournament and the winning seventh- and eighth-grade teams combined to take on the school faculty members.

The tournament was held for fun and to raise money for the Dog Pound.

In the final game, John Sherman hit a pair of 3-pointers as the students built a 15-11 lead after the opening eight minutes of play. The teachers fought back for a 21-19 lead. Student Drew Tarantino intentionally missed a foul shot, got his own rebound and scored just before the buzzer to salvage a 21-21 tie for the students.

After the eight minute first half, the teams played only a four minute-long second half before calling it quits.

“It’s called teacher rules,” teacher Jim Ross said with a laugh.
