Bent Of The River Offers Winter Walks

SOUTHBURY –– Two upcoming outdoor programs at the Bent of the River Audubon Center in Southbury are planned for those who enjoy walking in a winter landscape while learning more about nature.

On Sunday, January 23, from 1 to 4 pm, area residents are invited to spend a leisurely Sunday afternoon exploring winter’s natural beauty on the trails of the Bent.

Hike, ski. or snowshoe to the Bent’s education barn, where you can warm up next to the wood stove while sipping tea or hot chocolate.  The Audubon Center staff will be available to identify birds and animals that make the Bent their home, as well as answer questions about the sanctuary. No fees for this program.

On Monday, January 24, from 9 to 11 am, the Bent will host an adult Winter Weeds Walk. Winter weeds are the tough old skeletons of plants and ferns that grew last summer. In many ways, their bare, minimalist winter structure is more elegant than their summer fullness.

Identification of winter weeds presents an interesting puzzle. Some, like milkweed, are easy.  Others are more challenging. Education Director Ellen Turner will be on hand to discuss these plants that help define winter’s beauty.

Besides winter weeds, there is always plenty to see at the Bent in January and February –– tracks in the snow, ducks on the river, and birds at the feeders.  Participants should meet at the kiosk in the visitor parking lot at the sanctuary entrance.  Fees:  $3 for members; $5 for nonmembers.

Bent of the River, a 660-acre wildlife sanctuary owned and managed by the National Audubon Society, is home to many species of birds, mammals, butterflies, and amphibians, as well as a rich diversity of tree and plant life.

The grounds and more than 15 miles of trails are open to visitors seven days a week during daylight hours. The sanctuary is located on East Flat Hill Road in South Britain, about a half mile from Connecticut Route 172 off of I-84 (Exit 14).  For more information, call 203-264-5098.
