Children’s Programs

*Children’s Craft Workshop: join Mrs Walker for a seasonal craft workshop on Saturday, December 6, from 1 to 2 pm, in the children’s department. The workshop is open to children ages 6 and older. A $3 material fee is due upon registration. Sign up in the children’s department; phone registrations will not be accepted.

*Gingerbread Workshop: Come decorate your own gingerbread house with royal icing and festive candies. A special workshop will be held on Saturday, December 13, at 3 pm, in the library’s lower meeting room. A $3 material fee is due upon registration. Sign up in the children’s department. Phone registrations will not be accepted.

*The Return of Rabbi Praver: Rabbi Praver is returning with his guitar and talent to C.H. Booth Library on Sunday, December 14, at 3 pm, for an hour of Israeli and American folk music for children ages 4 to 7. The program is free and no registration is required.

Young Adults

*Book Discussion: Join us on Wednesday, December 3, from 4:30 to 5:30 pm, for a discussion of Odysseus in the Serpent Maze by Jane Yolen and Robert J. Harris. This is a swashbuckling adventure complete with mythical Greek heroes and pirates.

*New Date For Stamp Art Workshops: Barbara Shohet’s workshop for Winter & Festive Stamp Art has been rescheduled for Wednesday, December 10, from 4 to 6 pm.

Use your creative energy to make a gift bag or box, greeting cards, and even a stationery portfolio. Samples are on display in the library. The workshop is for those in grades 6 and up. There are just 15 spaces available, and a $5 supply fee will be necessary when you register. Sign up at the Main Floor Circulation Desk or call the library.

Now On View

*Travers Sculpture: James Travers, a self-taught artist who began sculpting only six years ago, is currently exhibiting his work at the library.

Mr Travers’s welded steel sculptures, created in his studio off Huntingtown Road, often incorporate found objects that have undergone extreme stress by heat, pressure, or forceful impact. Nevertheless, their inherent shape and integrity may be understood. His works range in size from tabletop to monumental. Though abstract in nature, they may suggest human or natural forms, and they are frequently untitled. The smaller pieces, which he calls “scenics,” are often brightly colored and may include some representational elements.

Mr Travers is presenting 13 of his works until December 2.

*Final Weekend for Fabric & Watercolor Works: Eleanor Loecher is presenting a collection of her fabric collages and watercolor paintings in the Olga Kopeckne Memorial Meeting Room at the library. The exhibition is on view until November 29.

Adult Programs

*Frida Kahlo, In Slides & Screen: On Thursday, December 4, at 7:30 pm, the library will host a screening of the feature film Frida, based on the life of the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. The film, starring Salma Hayek, is free and is rated R.

Then on December 11 at 7:30, the art historian Heike Stucke will give a slide show and talk on Frida Kahlo focusing on her life and art. This program is also free. Please sign up for either program by calling the library.

*‘A Child’s Christmas’ With Holiday Music: A Child’s Christmas in Wales will be brought to life by storyteller and actor Peter Loffredo on Tuesday, December 9, at 7 pm. The story tells the poignant tale of Dylan Thomas’ warm childhood and Christmas memories while growing up in Wales.

Prior to the reading Duane Reilley and David Childs will perform some holiday music on keyboard and saxophone. Homemade treats will be served. The program is free and the public is invited to enjoy a pleasant evening full of good holiday cheer.

*1854 Newtown Maps: One of the library’s beautiful historical maps of Newtown has been reproduced by the Friends of The C.H. Booth Library and can be yours for $40. The 1854 map measures 24 by 30 inches and is printed on 100% cotton rag. It features several familiar Newtown landmarks including homes, businesses, and churches.
