With a pounding overhand slam and a devastating serve, Stephanie Logan quickly developed into one of the most dominant volleyball players in the South-West Conference and helped lead Newtown High School to an SWC championship in 2002.

Now Logan, 17, is ready for the next level and last week signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Division I Quinnipiac University in Hamden and play for Makeba Davis.

Logan could be at the forefront of affecting a big turnaround as the Lady Bobcats finished 6-21 overall and 4-4 in the Northeast Conference.

The ‘Cats played some big-time schools like Boston College, Providence and the University of Connecticut.

“There were a bunch of Division II schools interested,” Logan said last week, “but I really wanted to go to Quinnipiac. I love competition and I wanted to play Division I. I look forward to proving myself on the court.”

Logan was the middle hitter for the Lady Nighthawks, but next fall will see a move to the outside since coach Davis recruited a passel of new middle blockers. The Lady Bobcats are anxiously looking for a good outside hitter and Logan is excited about the new opportunity.

“It’s definitely not the kind of competition that Stanford sees,” admitted Logan, who likely major in business, “but it still makes me a little nervous to start from scratch again.”

But she had such an exceptionally strong high school career (although, admittedly, last year was more dominant than this year)` and could get a chance to contribute right away for a Lady Bobcats team that is and will feature just two seniors next year – both setters.
