Ricci’s Plans Night Of Beauty To Benefit Kevin’s Community Center

Ricci’s Salon & Spa of Newtown will host a “Night of Beauty” for Kevin’s Community Center on Monday, September 15, from 4 to 8 pm. All haircuts will be $25. Additional services offered at this event include 15-minute chair massages for $15, makeup applications at $15, and manicures for $12.

All proceeds will be donated to Kevin’s Community Center, a clinic designed to provide free primary care services for Newtown’s uninsured and low-income adults. In addition to acute care at the clinic, medical services at no cost will be provided by a referral network of physicians, including chiropractors, dermatologists, dentists, opticians, neurologists, orthopedists, and others.

The center was named for Dr Michael Taweh’s son, Kevin, who died in a tragic home accident last year. This is his way of honoring his son’s memory by providing medical services free of charge to those who need them the most and can least afford to pay.

Kevin’s Community Center held its grand opening and dedication ceremony on Saturday, August 9, with an estimated 150 friends, supporters, and elected officials in attendance. The clinic’s first day of operation was Wednesday, August 13. The community center is located in an area donated by Newtown Department of Health at Canaan House on the Fairfield Hills campus. It is initially open every Wednesday from 1 to 5 pm.

Though volunteer physicians, nurses, and administrators will staff the clinic, it will cost approximately $50,000 to operate the clinic annually. Ninety-nine percent of all public contributions will go for direct patient care.

Danbury Hospital has donated furnishings and equipment for the clinic. A partnership has also been established with the hospital that allows the clinic to provide free laboratory and some radiology services.

The clinic will dispense medications without cost but when there is a need for drugs it does not have, Newtown Drug Center has agreed to provide a discounted rate for clinic patients.

In addition to acute care at the clinic, medical care at no cost will be provided by a referral network of physicians in all subspecialties of medicine such as chiropractors, dermatologists, orthopedists, neurologists, and others.

Ricci’s Salon & Spa is located at 99 South Main Marketplace. Call 426-1611 to make an appointment for the services available in this fundraiser.
