Surviving In This Community
To the Editor:
Let the people in their million-dollar houses who drive gas-guzzling SUVs and have children with every electronic gadget imaginable, let them fund the school expansion. While the expansion might be necessary given the projected number of students in 2010, perhaps the burden on taxpayers could be reduced by controlling the amenities we provide students and requiring parents instead to cover those costs on a sliding-scale basis.
I live in a 900-square-foot home, I donât have children, and I pay $4,000 in taxes. How much more should I have to pay to support other peopleâs children? I agree that as a society we have a duty to educate the communityâs children, but does not society have an equal obligation to protect my ability to survive in this community?
