*“Many Moods Through Time and Change:” Local artist Marie Marotto is exhibiting some of her favorite oil and watercolors paintings through July 30 in the meeting room during regular library hours.

Children’s Activities

*Monday Afternoon Crafts: Marie Walker is conducting one-hour craft workshops on Mondays until August 3. The workshops begin at 3:30 each week and are for ages 6 and up.

Sign-up needs to be done in person at the children’s desk. A $3 material fee is due upon registration.

*Stories with Curtis: Popular story teller Curtis Urbina is back with his unique sense of humor and love of stories on Tuesdays this month. Programs begin at 10 am.

Recommended for ages 4-6, there is no registration. Just be ready to have fun.

*PJ Story Time has moved to Tuesday evenings (July 7-28 and August 4) at 6:30 pm.

Each week features a puppet play along with songs stories and generally silliness. Bring your blanket, pajamas encouraged. Recommended for ages 3-7, no registration required. The play for July 21 will be Little Red Riding Hood.

*Flute Sweets and Tickletoons presents Green Golly and Her Golden Flute.

Tickle Tunes introduces children to the works of major classical composers. A unique interpretation of Rapunzel will be offered July 24 at 3:30 pm.

Recommended for ages 4 and up, registration can be done online. Parents must stay with children under 10.

*Reading With Hooper: Hooper, a yellow Lab, is a certified reading buddy and pet therapy partner with his human mom, Jane Paley. Sessions will continue at 11 am in the Children’s Library on July 25 and August 3.

In addition to reading some favorite dog stories, Ms Paley will share Hooper’s story as well. She and her husband rescued him in the wake of Hurricane Katrina

For Young Adults

*‘Tweens & Teens Summer Reading is underway!

Young people entering grades 6-12 can participate by filling out a short form each time you finish a book, and dropping it in the jar in the YA area. Every Monday we have a drawing and give away five prizes from local merchants – gift certificates for food, merchandise and entertainment.

*If you have a numbered WWE SummerSlamReadingJam poster, the winners will be posted this Friday (July 17). All details are online at the YAWebSpot.

*Needle Felting Crafts with Katie Stevenson: Create small whimsical objects and decorative projects that are really special, using special sharp needles.

This is for rising grades 5-12 (ages 10-18), and limited to 15 young people, with preference given to Newtown residents.

Supply fee of $6 can be paid at program. Bring a thimble that fits on the index finger of your non-dominant hand (available in quilt shops). Details and signups are online.

*Chess Club meets all summer with Glenn Budzinski, Saturday afternoons from 1 to 5 pm on the third floor.

Adult Programs

*The Lou Gehrig Story: On Tuesday, July 28, at 2 pm, award-winning story teller Carol Birch will share the story of Lou Gehrig from childhood, through his career with the NY Yankees, his marriage, and his final battle with ALS.

His story, told with humor and heart, grit and glory, resonates for diehard baseball fans and the uninitiated alike. We’ll serve yummy ballpark snacks so please call or sign up online if you plan on coming.

Author Jan Mann will be here on Thursday, July 30, to discuss her book on summertime fun, Cruising Connecticut with a Picnic Basket.

*Chess Lessons for Adults: Glenn Budzinski will be at the library for five Thursdays, July 23 to August 20, to teach intermediate chess lessons. Each program begins at 7 pm. Sign up online or by calling the library. The lessons are free but space is limited.
