The Newtown Middle School softball team opened the 2004 season with a hard-fought 7-6 win over Seymour on Friday, April 16.

Katie Kirrane was 0-for-0, but walked three times, stole three bases, scored three runs and sparkled on defense. Jaclyn Van Waalwijk singled, stole four bases and scored two runs while Joanna Barry singled, stole three bases, scored a run and drove in another. Katie Schmidt also singled and scored.

Emily Kluga singled, drove in a run and had a fine defensive game for the Lady Lions while Jenna Legros and Stacy Broughton shared the pitching duties, combining for nine strikeouts while allowing just four hits.

The Lady Lions will return to the field on Tuesday, May 4, for a visit to Memorial of Middlebury and will visit Rochambeau on Thursday, May 6.
