A Summer Course On Connecticut’s History

NEW BRITAIN — A program offering “Connecticut Encounters: Art, Culture & Industry,” is set for July 12–23 at Central Connecticut State University.

The program is being presented by faculty, staff members and associates of Central Connecticut State University and the Antiquarian & Landmark Society.

The course offers students, practicing teachers and the interested public a unique immersion experience in Connecticut history and material culture.

The two-week intensive course will consist of lectures, field trips, films and discussion. Those registering for credit will be assigned a class project.

In its first offering, “Connecticut Encounters” (History 511) will focus on Connecticut’s industrial age.

Students will visit historic sites in Hartford, Torrington, Waterbury, Bridgeport, Willimantic, New Haven, Winsted, and the iron region of northwest Connecticut.

The course will be team-taught under the direction of CCSU history professor Briann Greenfield. Guest lecturers and site interpreters will include A&L Director Bill Hosley, A&L Education Director Rebecca Taber-Conover, Museum of Connecticut History Director Dean Nelson, industrial historian Ed Kirby, Windham Textile Museum Director Beverly York, Ann Smith of the Mattatuck Museum, and others.

Cost for the course is $750 for non-credit students and $1,097 for a graduate earning a course credit.

Teachers taking the course for a CEU credit will be charged $750. Fees include transportation, admission fees and special lectures; lunch is not included.
