Mattatuck Museum Sponsoring State Forest Walk

NAUGATUCK — The Mattatuck Museum, in conjunction with its current exhibit “Back to Nature: City Parks and Country Retreats,” will sponsor a hike into Naugatuck State Forest on Sunday, June 13, from 1 to 3 pm.

Jerry Milne of the State of Connecticut, Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Forestry, will lead the program. Participants will view pine plantations planted by Harris Whittemore in 1926 and see how the trees are doing.

Mr Milne will also show areas where the DEP Division of Forestry has conducted timber harvests, as well as prescribed burning of fields to maintain early successional habitat for songbirds.

Call 203-753-0381, extension 10, to RSVP and for more information. Birders should bring binoculars. Everyone should wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots.

The program will take place rain or shine, and there is no charge.

The group will meet at the parking lot behind Naugatuck Town Hall.

The Mattatuck Museum’s exhibit, “Back to Nature: City Parks and Country Retreats,” which includes historical materials on Quassy, Naugatuck State Forest and Topsmead, as well as a number of city parks, will continue through September 5.
