Buick Championship

For the 15th year, Chris Berman of ESPN will serve as host of the St. Paul/Traveler’s Celebrity Pro-Am at the Buick Championship next month at the TPC at River Highlands in Cromwell.

Joining Berman at the tournament will be 2004 NCAA women’s basketball championship coach Geno Auriemma, former Yale football star Jack Ford, and West Hartford native John O’Hurley (J Peterman of Seinfeld fame).

The Pro-Am will be held Wednesday, August 25.

“Chris Berman means so much to our tournament,” said tournament director Dan Baker. “He hosts our media day, does our radio and TV advertisements, promotes us out at other tour events, hosts our Celebrity Long Drive Contest, and then recruits and plays host to all of our celebrities at the Pro-Am. We couldn’t find a greater ambassador for the Buick Championship than Chris.”

Berman won his third broadcaster of the year award in 2002, honored by his peers for his role on ESPN’s NFL Game Day. Berman is one of two broadcaster’s left from the original ESPN team.

The Greater Hartford Jaycees have announced that New England tour professionals Brett Quigley and Patrick Sheehan have committed to play in the Buick Championship, joining a host of other players such as Nick Price, Fred Funk, Mark Calcavecchia, Brad Faxon, Billy Andrade, Tim Petrovic and JJ Henry.

“Patrick Sheehan has show steady improvement from the Nationwide tour to the PGA tour,” said Baker. “I think it’s a matter of time before he finds his way to winning out there. He has all the skills to be a successful player.”

Quigley has one more than $3 million in his PGA career and has recorded two second-place finishes - one at the 2001 Greensboro Open and recently at the US Bank Championship in Milwaukee.

Sheehan is a 1992 graduate of the University of Hartford. He is in his second year on the PGA tour after qualifying last year by finishing 12th on the Nationwide tour money list.
