Campus

Notes

Two Newtown residents, Jayme Beckham, a senior studying secondary education, and Roger Connor Jr, a junior majoring in theater arts, will be named in the 2005 edition of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. The Western Connecticut State University students are considered outstanding campus leaders.

Recommended for consideration by faculty, staff, and their peers, the students were selected by campus nominating committees and the editors of the annual directory, which has been published since 1934. The criteria for inclusion were academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities, and potential for success.

By having their names included in Who’s Who, these students join an elite group of highly respected leaders from almost 2,000 institutions of higher learning nationwide.

Emily Oliver from Newtown High School has been selected as one of the four finalists for the 2005 Young Connecticut Playwrights Festival. Emily has been honored for her play Taxi Cab Redemption, which will be performed at 7 pm on May 27 at the Apron Stage at the Waterbury Arts Magnet School. All four finalists will receive the Gilda Anderson Award, a Fellowship to Observe at the National Playwrights Conference at the O’Neill Theatre Center in Waterford.

Big Y World Class Markets have selected almost 300 academically outstanding students from communities surrounding their stores to receive a total of $207,500 in college scholarships for the 2005-2006 academic year. These awards are based on academic merit, regardless of financial need. Awards were presented on May 18, along with a reception at the Big Y Store Support Center in Springfield. Newtown residents Quincey Blanchard and Krishna Patel have received the Big Y Fellowship for Academic Excellence award as did Sandy Hook residents Sara Davis, Karoline Engel and Sarah Hemingway.
