Open Burning Permits Available November 1

The town will again start issuing open burning permits on Monday, November 1, weather conditions permitting, according to Fire Marshal Bill Halstead. Open burning season runs from November 1 to April 1.

Local open burning is allowed under controlled conditions, provided that permits are obtained at the town fire marshal’s office before the open burning occurs. Open burning permits allow residents to dispose of unwanted small brush.

Open burning is allowed from 9 am to 5 pm. Fires must be completely out by 5 pm. Open burning is not allowed in wooded areas. People who receive a permit must check with the town’s fire dispatching center on the permit date to learn if weather conditions are suitable for open burning.

The permit fee is $5. Permit holders are provided with a list of rules they must follow. Permits may be obtained in person at the town fire marshal’s office at Canaan House at Fairfield Hills.

The office is open weekdays from 8 am to 4:30 pm. The telephone number is 270-4370.

People who want to do open burning on the same day that they apply for a permit should arrive at the fire marshal’s office early on that day to apply for a permit.
