CLEMENT GREENBURG TO OPEN JAN 23 AT KM OF ART

tg/lsb set 1-5 #614209

KATONAH, N.Y. — Katonah Museum of Art will present “Clement Greenberg: A Critic’s Collection” January 23–April 27.

Jackson Pollock, Helen Frankenthaler, Hans Hoffmann, Kenneth Noland and Anthony Caro are among the artists whose works are included in this exhibition of selected works from the personal collection of Clement Greenberg, one of the most renowned and controversial American art critics of the Twentieth Century. Spanning five decades of American art, Greenberg’s collection aptly reflects his ideas, passions and his personal relationships with a multitude of artists.

“Clement Greenberg: A Critic’s Collection” includes several vivid canvases created by color field painters Kenneth Noland and Jules Olitski in the 1960s; a selection of robust, striated acrylic on canvas works from the 1970s by Larry Poons; steel sculptures created by Anthony Caro, Willard Boepple and James Wolfe; and, in a departure from the dominance of abstract art in Greenberg’s collection, there are figurative works by the Uruguayan artist Horacio Torres and the Canadian artist Dorothy Knowles.

In the Marilyn M. Simpson Sculpture Garden, “Magdalena Abakanowicz: Backward Seated Figures” is on view currently until April 17. Her 20 headless “Backward Seated Figures” in the KMA installation suggest a gathering of people in a posture of obeisance. Made of burlap and resin and cast in bronze, each form is unique, but exists within a mass of similar forms. Abakanowicz resides in Poland, a witness and survivor of Nazi and Communist occupation. Her art, however, is universal.

On the south lawn is “Charles O. Perry: Broken Symmetry,” which sits adjacent to the entrance drive of the museum, the site of a changing display of large-scale works that beckon to and welcome visitors. Like all of Perry’s work, “Broken Symmetry” displays an elegance of form that masks the mathematical and scientific complexity of its genesis.

Additionally, the learning center will open “Robert Andrew Parker Illustrates Action Jackson” on January 23, which will run through May 6. Abstract artist Jackson Pollock takes the spotlight in this outstanding picture book that tells the story of the creation of his famous work of art, “Number One (Lavender Mist).” This exhibition features the wonderfully vibrant pen and watercolor illustrations Robert Andrew Parker created to accompany the lyrical text written by award-winning authors Jan Greenberg and Sandra Jordan.

The Katonah Museum of Art is at Route 22 at Jay Street. For information, www.KatonahMuseum.org.
