Knights 2, Avon 0 â Jeff Spencer and Anthony Gruce drove in runs to lead the Newtown Knights to a 2-0 win over Avon in Connecticut Babe Ruth League action at Walnut Tree Field. Tyler Edwards led off the bottom of the first with a single and Jeff DiNicola followed with a walk and both eventually came around to score. That was all the scoring the Knightâs pitching staff would need as Adam Mannino, Mike Coates, DiNicola and Spencer allowed only two hits. The Newtown defense was sharp including nice fielding plays by brothers Dale and Nick Neves in the outfield and consistent play at shortstop by Coates.
SOFTBALL
U10
Peopleâs Bank 11, Advantage Loan 10 â Jade Mather and Kendall Svanda played well to lead Peopleâs Bank to the win. Claire Miles went 2-for-3 at the plate and Melanie Rotante did an outstanding job at first and behind the plate to spark the defense. For Advantage Loan, Taylor Brady, Madison Hauck and Jessica Gibbons all played well.
The Villa 12, Richâs Keys and Locks 6 â Ashley Cerone pitched two innings and gave up only one run as The Villa recorded the win. Katelyn Dandrea banged out two hits, including a double while Julia Clarke and Meghan Davis had one hit apiece.
Student Division
Union Savings Bank versus Century 21 â Lauren Tripodi and Sophia Chiravelli played well in the field while Alex Barrows and Liz Townsend pitched well to lead Union Savings.
LACROSSE
Girls 5/6 Blue
Newtown 15, New Fairfield 7 â Katie Canavan scored five goals and Kaitlyn Vos Winkel added four more to lead Newtown to the win. Sarah Attanasio and Maggie Korth popped in two goals apiece while Meredith Bridges and Meagan Knox added solo goals. Kelly Gaston helped support the offense as Rachael Hyland, Alex Klein, Jillian Jagoe, Kyra Middeleer and goalie Katelyn Kean had superb performances.
Girls 5/6 Gold
Newtown 12, New Milford 7 â Kaitlin Brophy scored a whopping 10 goals and Katie Canavan added two more to lead Newtown to the win. Meredith Bridges, Michelle Isabella and Molly Mahoney all registered assists. Bridges played a major part of the game with her defensive skills. Goalie Marisa Cucco had an outstanding job in goal, saving 10 shots.
